Acas guidance for academies and free schools
The next few years will be an interesting and challenging period for the education sector as the Government progresses with its academies and free schools programmes. For many school leaders this means becoming employers for the first time. Many may choose to buy employment related services from local authorities, or use commercial organisations. Some will have experienced sponsors they can turn to for help, but others will want to handle employment matters themselves. School leaders, local authorities, trade unions and sponsors can all benefit from help from Acas.
Acas has consulted with the teaching unions and understands that whilst they are opposed to the Government's strategy, once an academy is established they recognise that many of their members now work in academies and free schools, and that they therefore need to work with the new system where appropriate to ensure that they represent their members. They are also supportive of independent guidance on good practice from Acas being provided for academies and free schools including on trade union recognition.
As an authority on change management and employment relations, Acas is in a position to offer independent help to deal with the issues thrown up by a transition to academy status, or the establishment of a free school.
