Employment law update

Acas are the employment relations experts and a trusted source of advice for employers, employees, Government and others.

The Government has announced several proposed changes to employment law. It has also launched a number of consultations on further proposed changes. A round up of these changes is listed below to help people understand them and their potential impact.

Managing sickness absence

A health and work assessment and advisory service is to be introduced, offering free occupational health assistance for employees, employers and GPs. The service can provide an occupational health assessment after four weeks of sickness absence. Further information is available from GOV.UK - Fit for Work guidance.

National Minimum Wage rate increase


aged 21 and over - £6.70 per hour

aged 18-20 - £5.30

aged 16-17 - £3.87

Apprentices under 19, or over 19 and in the first year of the apprenticeship - £3.30 per hour.

The National Living Wage

A compulsory National Living Wage is due to be introduced in April 2016 for all working people aged 25 and over, and will be set at £7.20 per hour.

Tax-free childcare scheme

Families where both parents work and each earns less that £150,000 per year will be eligible to receive 20% of their yearly childcare costs of up to £2,000 for each child or £4,000 if the child is disabled.
